Caribbean Travel - Kangaroo Island Australia - Serves Up Coastal Activities Galore
KI has it all, to swimming in sheltered white sandy beaches, to fishing charters in the turquoise waters, from tours of the sea lions at seal bay. Kangaroo Island has plenty for everyone to get involved in, with 540 kilometers of coastline.
Stokes Bay and Vivione Bay for a swim with the kids, also try Browns beach. Where the shallow waters at the mouth of the Chapman river offer the kids a great place to play, for families with kids head to Antechamber Bay. Have colder water and are more prone to rips and currents, are more exposed, beaches on the south coast. Generally the sheltered swimming beaches are on the north coast.
For the advanced crowd you need to head to Hanson or D'Estrees Bay. Pennington or Stokes Bay, if you're a beginner head to Vivione. Westerly swells with southerly winds are needed, to get rideable waves on the north coast. This is more common in winter, the northerly winds and bigger swells need to combine, for bigger waves. Creating waves on the south and west coast, normally the waves roll in from the south-west direction. The surfing in Kangaroo island varies a lot throughout the year.
With plenty of sheltered waters to cruise and admire the abundance of wildlife its and experience not to miss. Several companies on the island hire kayaks and offer guided tours, if you don't have your own. Kayaking is another great way way to explore the coastline.
And snorkel with fish and the spectacular leafy sea dragon which has to be seen to be believed (it actually looks like a fairy tale creature with leafy seaweed hanging off it), other ways to get your feet wet and explore the coastline include marine tours where you can swim with dolphins in the wild.
All 100-250 of them, one of the extraordinary things about the species is that it is the male that gets pregnant and caries the eggs. They are a protected species as their habitat is threatened by pollution and fertilizer run-off. Grows to about 45 cm long and make their home among the inshore seagrass, the Leafy Sea Dragon is a relative to the sea horse.
Many of these make great wreck diving, kangaroo Island has some 50 shipwrecks scattered around the coastline, as well as the bountiful wildlife.
Tommy Ruff and Trevally, australian Salmon, including King George Whiting, there's a variety of fish to be caught. Or dangle it off a deep sea charter, a historic jetty, for fishermen you can choose from casting a line off a surf beach.
Then there are sheltered anchorages on the north coast where you can have a cove to yourself in clear water and fantastic scenery, if sailing is your activity.
